Every song is protected by multiple types of copyright. Permission to use one type of right does NOT imply permission to use all the songs' rights.
Here are some definitions for some of the rights associated with music:
The Musical Work is the composition of the musical notes that make up the tune of the song, along with any accompanying lyrics. Both the composition and the lyrics are protected individually AND as a complete work. The use of the Musical Work generally requires a Mechanical License.
The Sheet Music is an expression of the Musical Work on paper that is used by musicians to perform the song using musical instruments or voice. The use of Sheet Music generally requires a Print License.
Master Sound Recordings are recordings of the Musical Work. This can include instrumental versions as well as versions performed with singers. The use of a Master Sound Recording generally requires a Master Use License.
Music Videos are video recordings that include the song and/or lyrics. Group’s music videos almost always include the Master Sound Recording and the lyrics. The use of a song in a Music Video generally requires a Video Sync license. If lyrics are also displayed, that would require a Print License as well.
NOTE: Other, less requested music rights, such as performance, print, or broadcast rights are not addressed in this FAQ. If you would like to request permission to use Group-owned print or media content, please download our Permission Request Form, fill it out, and email it to permissions@group.com.
